For the second instalment of our International Women’s Day series, we are chatting with Sarah Moffat. As the Assistant Manager at Fitness4Less Colchester, Sarah has been a staple of the gym community for nearly two decades.
From starting as a member to leading the team today, Sarah shares her insights on mindset, resilience, and the importance of strength training.
Starting the Day Right "
A morning routine is incredibly important to me. I quite like a slower start before heading into the gym. By giving myself that time, I feel energised and ready to lead my team and support our members with a positive mindset from the moment I walk through the doors."
Being Smart with Time and Energy "
Because my management role involves teaching classes as well, I have to be smart with my time. I try to train after I finish work two or three times a week. Currently, I am mainly focusing on strength, as I am in a stage of life where this is so important for long-term health. However, I always listen to my body. If I need to rest, I do, as recovery is equally vital."
From Member to Manager: A 17-Year Journey "
I have always been passionate about health and wellbeing. Seventeen years ago, I was actually a member at this very club. I felt it was an environment I would love to be a part of professionally, and I am still here today! It is a testament to the community we have built."
Leading Through Change "
When I took on the Assistant Manager role nearly three years ago, I was navigating perimenopause. There were days when I questioned if I could manage the demands of the position. However, I am naturally a resilient person. I found the strength and belief that I could do it, and I am proving that every day. Mindset is everything. I believe in leading by example, which helps to motivate both my team and our members."
The Art of the Balanced Meal "
My go-to healthy meal tends to be anything protein and vegetable-based, such as a salad or a pasta dish. I am someone who can throw a meal together out of almost anything! For me, balance is the key to staying fuelled during a busy shift."
The Reward of Positive Impact "
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the positive impact the gym has on women. Whether it is building physical strength, improving mobility and flexibility, or reaching a specific fitness goal, I love seeing the progress. Most importantly, I love seeing the positive effect exercise has on a person’s mental health."
Switching Off at Home "
My non-negotiable habit for mental clarity is a simple one: I try not to talk about work when I am at home. My husband is actually a Personal Trainer here as well, but believe it or not, we rarely talk about the gym once we are through the front door!"
Empowering Women Through the Ages "
I think we already do a lot for our female members, but as we age, our bodies continue to change. I believe that providing even more focused support for women as they navigate different life stages can only be a positive thing for our community."
