Whether you want to lose weight, change your routine, get stronger, or simply exercise more, fitness resolutions are amongst some of the most popular resolutions people make every year. But making the resolution is the easy part - so how do you avoid throwing in the towel after a couple of weeks?
- Be Specific
It's easy to give up on your resolutions if they're too vague. Simply saying you want to 'lose weight' or 'tone up' is not something that's easy to measure. Rather set goals that are trackable for example; complete 3 unassisted pull-ups, run 5km in X time, lift X amount of weight. These are goals that can you can tangibly meet and work your way towards.
- Track Your Progress With Smaller Goals
The only way to know whether you're getting closer to your main goal is if you track it. This could be with the help of a Personal Trainer, with a fitness watch or fitness App, or simply noting it down in a notebook or on your phone.
For example, if you're trying to complete 3 unassisted pull-ups this year as your main goal you will need to break this down into smaller achievable goals to get there. This could be initially focusing on your arm and core strength, then mastering your assisted pull-ups, and then working on completing 1, 2 and finally 3 consecutive unassisted pull-ups.
The key is to BREAK IT DOWN!
- Don't Do It Alone
Your resolutions are personal to you but that doesn't mean you have to work on them alone. Team up with a gym buddy or reach out to one of our expert Personal Trainers who can help to keep you feeling motivated and accountable on your journey.
- 'Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy'
Resolutions are NOT a competition. Whilst it's difficult not to compare yourself to people online, in the gym, and in your social circle - everyone is unique and everyone's journey is different. And that's the best part! If you feel yourself starting to compare your progress with other people around you, remember that nobody will achieve the same results as you in the same time period.
- Have Fun!
Working on your resolutions should not feel like a chore. At the end of the day, if the process is unenjoyable you're unlikely to stick with it. So don't put too much pressure on yourself and remember that consistency is much more important than intensity in the long run!
